You have a wide range of options when purchasing siding for your home. Wood, aluminum, and vinyl are perhaps the most common, each with its own set of pros and cons. Comparing these three siding types can help you learn why vinyl siding may be your best choice.

If you're getting ready to buy siding, consider these three criteria when weighing your options: durability, affordability, and style. Here's how the three main siding types compare.

• Wood siding: Although this kind of siding may be the most pleasing to the eye, it usually requires the most maintenance. Wind, moisture, and sunlight can cause greater wear to wood siding than to vinyl or aluminum. It's also more expensive than other siding types.
• Aluminum siding: The strongest and most durable type of siding available, aluminum siding is more affordable that its wooden counterpart. Siding prices for aluminum and vinyl are comparable, although aluminum usually prices slightly higher. The maintenance requirements for aluminum siding are very low, although dents from general wear and exposure can occur.
• Vinyl siding: Though not quite as strong as aluminum, vinyl siding is very durable and requires the least amount of maintenance (only periodic washing). Vinyl siding also comes in hundreds of colors, as well as in a growing number of styles.

Making Your Siding Decision

• How's the weather? If you live in an area where weather can be harsh, vinyl might be the most practical option. Though it's not quite as strong as aluminum, it offers excellent durability at a reasonable price.
• What can I afford? Wood siding can look great, but is it a good financial choice? Vinyl is the most affordable siding option available.
• What's my style? If you're looking to give your home a classic feel, wood siding is an excellent choice. If a more contemporary look fits your fancy, vinyl siding offers a wide range of colors and styles not available with other siding materials.

Selecting an exterior siding for your home can be difficult. Not only do you need to compare and contrast the different choices, but you need to determine which one falls in line with what you want and need. If you crave a siding that's both durable and affordable, vinyl might be your best bet.
